Annoying answering machines, aging relatives, disaffected teenagers, beloved canines and a striking number of highway odysseys were among the more frequently appearing elements in the 81 stories entered into this year’s fiction contest. CP Editor David Warner chose 13 finalists from this group (authors’ names were removed before judging) and passed them on to fiction judge Toby Olson, who selected the winning story. Poetry judge Molly Russakoff read all 107 of the poetry entries (again with authors’ names removed).

The contest winners, Barbara Kriegsmann (fiction) and frankjmiles (poetry), receive cash prizes of $350 apiece. They will read from their work, as will the two judges, at Molly’s Café, 910-12 Christian St., Thursday, Jan. 18 at 7:30 p.m.
