Tyrone Hill

Trombonist Tyrone Hill has gotten a lot of mileage — light-years, really — out of his association with the Sun Ra Arkestra. Like any devoted cadet, he’s wont to reinterpreting Sonny’s songs ("We’re Living in a Space Age," "Angels and Demons at Play," etc.) and preserving the Master’s otherworldly aura. It’s a perfect fit for Hill, whose style embraces both the creative precision of Julian Priester and the bleats of Roswell Rudd. Here he’s joined by an A-list Philadelphia ensemble: tenor saxophonist Odean Pope, bassist Howard Cooper, drummer Kevin Diehl, and alto saxophonist (and the Arkestra’s current leader) Marshall Allen.
