A photo never lies, right? Wrong — and contemporary photographers have been putting the lie to that truism for so long now that even your average second grader probably has a healthy skepticism about mediated "reality." This week the Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts opens an exhibition of 17 American and European artists who, aided by the ever more astonishing tricks of technology, play with our heads while pushing the limits of the camera’s eye. The show, which was curated by Douglas F. Maxwell of NYU for the Gallery Camino Real in Boca Raton, FL, includes such art stars as Cindy Sherman, she of the multiple photographic personae (one of her self-portraits is shown above), and Gregory Crewdson, he of the meticulously recreated "documentary" images of events that never were.
