The Beat Box

Hip-hop happenings.

It’s Memorial Day weekend y’all. Put your party shoes on and lace ’em up tight, cuz best believe these are all sneaker jams. So just what are the "Kemetic roots of hip hop?" I couldn’t tell you, but the MA’AT Restored Project kicks off yet another hip-hop/spoken word open mic, "Hip hop Rezurrected." Nah, we ain’t bitching, the more the merrier, plus Lady B is the host! The flier reads: "Calling conscious lyricists, powerful spoken word poets, righteous hip-hop headz." So pull the positive flow out ya pocket. Fri., May 25, at The Cornucopia, 4950 Parkside Ave., Smadaenra@yahoo.com, 215-701-7417, $12. (Whoa! Pricey, eh?)

Rebel Musik Is The Sound!!! Setting off this event is a backyard BBQ and graf exhibition. Ever wanted to bomb a wall of your very own? Bring paint and your can. Next, an open-stage/warm-up session with in-house Funk band Mr. Dugsz. Around 11 p.m. step up to the plate for the MC battle and a chance to win a recording session at Rebel Musik Studio in NY. At 11:30 p.m. there’s a b-girl/b-boy open stage and battle. After all that fun check The Cutmastas in the house: DJs Razor Ramone, Slash One, Mister Cizum, Evil Tracey and Brother Jamar. MCs rocking it: Words of Wisdom, I.B.M., Evolution Through Mastery, Haak Blast, Carl Madison. Sat., May 26, 4210 Spruce St., african_bushfly@hotmail.com, starting at 4 p.m., $5.

BeyondLogik and M.I.C. Productions present Real-ism: a two-floored memorial day hip-hop tribute. DJ’s Kwestion, Tone and Dre hold down the decks with Prophets of the Ghetto, Society Park, Briz and Masters of the U handling the mic. Mon., May 28, Diwans, Fifth and Bainbridge, 8 p.m.-2 a.m., $7 with flier (that’s why you should always take one!), $10 without.

Allergies? Got the spring sickies? The doctor’s in. Check the Remedy anniversary party. The RX is too ill, just one prescription will cure you; be there. Mon., May 28, Fluid, 613 S. Fourth St., 215-629-0565, 9 p.m.-2 a.m., $10.

That ill "female MC" most Black Lily heads miss to death is making a stop at Ryan Banks’ "The Fever" this week. Yea it’s muthafuckin’ Flo Brown! Straight out of Brick City, Flo should pack the house for the first time in The Fever’s short history. Be there early for the open mic backed by a live band. At 1 a.m. Cosmo steps into the DJ booth. Wed., May 30, Evolution, 1517 N. Delaware Ave, 215-634-0100, 10 p.m.-3:30 a.m., $5 before 11 p.m.
