As the spoken word scene in Philadelphia continues to blossom, another monthly linguistics jam is born. Every first Monday at Warmdaddy’s, jazz + spoken word = PHYREnEYCE Live! Is it the answer to The Painted Bride's Day of The Poet? Who knows — but it's a welcome forum for wordsmiths citywide. With featured poet Kimmika L.H. Williams tickling the senses this Monday, it’s a must-do.
This summer at Freedom Theater Williams brought the house down with her poems on eroticism. She’s also a teacher, actress, poet, lecturer, director and performer. William’s written several books of verse, won numerous awards (including a Pew Fellowship) and serves as Adjunct Professor of sociology, anthropology and African Art Appreciation at Temple. The PHYREnEYCE open mic is hosted by Ronnie Way and k.d. morris so bring the word power. And this is Warmdaddy’s ya’ll, so don’t forget the delicious menu — with Uncle Guss’ fried chicken tenders and Mighty Max’s low country mussels — mmmm, you’ve got to be here.
PHYREnEYCE Live!, Nov. 5, 8 p.m., $10, $15 day of show, Warmdaddy's, Front & Market Sts., 215-627-8400.
