How do you fly your flag: Freak or Old Glory? Our lil' cradle of liberty's been bursting with civic pride as of late: mama Jaguar Wright singing the national anthem at the Phillies season opener; South o' Washington's least-fave councilman, Frank DiCicco, turning on the film fest's giant Avenue of the Arts vid screen. But good will, to me, is best served chilled through charity close to home. Jon Gorski has bounced where Rick D has booked: Five years at Nick's, now Pontiac and Tritone. Jon's been your bud, made you pay, saved your drunken ass from getting beaten up. But a terrible car accident is costing him tons of time in rehab with no medical insurance, and he has a kid on the way as well. So Rick D goes Gorski-benefit crazy: April 14 at Tritone and April 15 at Pontiac, with Thorazine, Supersport and pals. (Rick D sings!) There'll be a raffle for a home-cooked gourmet dinner prepped and served by Marmont peeps. Booker Ed Jones of Budzilla Productions (Doc Watson's, Dos) has done well for you, too. But he had a house fire that sent his past to ashes. April 13's Doc Watson benefit (with Pale Blue, Wondercrush, Witzend and more) won't bring back his stuff. But it'll help. And the Big City Ball gets all Atlantis-y with a Lost City theme April 13 at the Curtis Center to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters. After that, you can get back to your greedy selves.... Along with big successes for Snipes and Bikini Bandits in weekend one of the world cinema film fest, give credit to Phil Cohen and Molly Corson's 1616 Locust: The megalopolis was the place to be at, at all hours surrounding the festival. Soon the old Locust Club and its neighboring brownstone will be that all the time and much more. Along with the duo expanding their dynasty in Old City (Griffin Cafe, Five Spot, etc.), and taking their monthly burlesque to 1616 April 20 with Ben Edwards & co., look first for 1616's up-soon outdoor Euro cafe to take on their long, lovely length of sidewalk. And is there a boutique hotel in 1616's future?.... Bikini Bandits star Dee Dee Ramone didn't show at Gyro's BB/1616 bash as promised. Why? His wife was supposedly jealous of the Bandits. Prolly the best thing. The party was so out of control (even some CP staff got rowdy!) that a chandelier came crashing down on the main dancefloor during Andrew "I believe in this movie" W.K.'s set. Supposedly, no one was badly hurt.... Dig homeboy David Fricke's appreciation for his review of Kenn Kweder's Kwederology volumes in this week's Rolling Stone.... Daniel Fish's psy-trance and breaks experiment hits Dahlak (4708 Baltimore) April 19.... After re-releasing the lo-pop Ordinary Time, Bill Ricchini recorded Morrissey's "Everyday Is Like Sunday" for a Trackstar label 7-inch and a new Christmas tunes for My Pal God; he'll play one last gig April 12 (Khyber's The Bigger Lovers/Capitol Years show) before touring.... Rumor: A South Street bar could be up for grabs -- bands or no bands -- now that an owner's wife came into millions of dollars from the unfortunate passing of a relative.... Action Plus!'s Mike Shellito, Robert Beach Balls and Jeff Photon hit the North Star April 11 to prep for their upcoming other-bands' recording sessions.... Whohungwhere? Jill Scott had her b-day bash at 1616. Harry Belafonte ate at Zanzibar Blue before lecturing at Irvine. John Glenn hung in K2, the Kimmel Center's new balcony restaubar. NYC Mayor Mike Bloomberg and Arlen Specter munched at Beau Monde. Sasha and Digweed hung at Phil Charles' home in Old City and Soul Travelin’ at Alma de Cuba. Alan Bates dashed in from his Broadway run of Fortune's Fool to pick up a film-fest award for John Schlesinger.... Scott Henry spins Transit April 12 for the newly rebirthed Maneo.com (Brian Nagele partnered with Demetrius and Aristotle, who are no longer owners of Evolution) and its second-anniversary bash/new VIP night.... Look for Columbia/Legacy to re-release the two CDs by Philly's legendary The Goats, with additional rare tracks, by year's end.... Slipstaters Maxx Luvv and dev79 kick into "Arythmetic"s ill dub sound at Atlas (2063 South).... Wild-eyed designer Kim Montenegro quietly opened Very Bad Horse at 606 N. Second. More soon.... PhillySoulCollective and Worship Records focus attention on the Rob Paine-mixed label retro-comp WOR.CD.01 all day April 13; first at 612 Clothing on South Fourth (from 6 p.m.) then at Silk City where Willyum, Zach and Paine press on.
