On the Clothes

Art

Gale Jamieson knows what to look for in clothes. First, finding fabric that says more than "mass-produced loom;" secondly, the fit: as much about form as function, and encompassing its feel on the body as much as its outer image.

Jamieson, to our collective disappointment, is no personal shopper: Her work in sculpture, instead, traces the lineage of garments, which connect us to history, to memories. Her pieces ask us to consider not just the surface appearance of a piece of clothing, but its associations: who has worn it before, where the fabric came from, what we want our bodies to look like as we wear it. Her show, "Threads," strikes a pose at the DCCA this week: She characterizes her work as an "open-ended conversation," believing that "as I handle materials... I am exploring a tradition... that is rich in its connection to culture, spirituality and myth." In such a dialogue, she recognizes, too, the contribution of the viewer: If you've hated roll-neck sweaters ever since you were forced to wear them in childhood, that's valid criticism. Fathoming fashion has never been more fun.

“Threads,” opens Fri., April 19, runs through June 2, Delaware Center for the Contemporary Arts, 200 S. Madison St., Wilmington, DE, 302-656-6466.
