To mention Poster Children without saying they're from Champaign is simply inattentive. It's the band's hometown and proud home base since 1987. So it's no surprise that the hip little Illinois burg played a part in PC's new DVD Zero Stars. A hilarious and well-crafted chronicle of life on tour, Zero Stars is self-produced, filmed and edited -- a winning combination of footage from their famously energetic live sets and dramatic re-creations of events from bassist Rose Marshack's tour diaries (which can be found on the kids' website). Their hometown friends filmed the live performances and acted in the between-song skits. The result is a charmingly unassuming look at the touring life of a semi-famous, industrious rock band: long drives between venues, rest-stop breaks, long drives, days off spent at museums and shopping malls, long drives, seedy motels, long drives -- all filmed with a truly funny and unforced tableau effect. But it's all about the music, right? So, with yet another new drummer and 15 years of momentum on their sides, the Poster Children keep on keepin' on with their frenetic punk-pop and their healthy sense of humor about being zero rock stars.
