April 25-May 1, 2002 mixpicks Jump InIn what seems like an interdisciplinarian, multi-mediated musical tribute, a Kerouacian soul search and an abstract expressionist dance party, the nonprofit arts coalition Jump Arts takes itself on the road. Like Charles Kuralt reading Whitman while tangoing with Nam June Paik to Anthony Braxton records, the beat-ethos American Road Project offers non-narrative improvised prose, dusty buckwild country tunes 'n' tall tales, on-stage action painting and tribal drumming with all its ritual rubbery ballet -- performed to an unsteadied, sinewy soundtrack of avant-jazz. Its participants -- from Jump VP and San Fran percussionist/composer David Brandt to NYC's Gold Sparkle Band, from underground anarchist/saxophonist Daniel Carter to Korean cellist Okkyung Lee -- have collaborated with such a who's-who of the American avant-garde, its list is as ridiculously lengthy to name as the bunches of performers (more than 12 of them) that will grace Tritone. Where they're going to fit them all could be a project all its own. Jump Arts American Road Project, Tue., April 30, 8-11 p.m., $12-$15, Tritone, 1508 South St., 215-545-0475. -- Respond to this article in our Forums -- click to jump there
