May 2- 8, 2002 mixpicks Stories From the Source
If understanding is the first step in getting to know a group of people, then "Where the Women Are," a multimedia whirlwind based on women's experiences, should shed some light onto the lives and outlook of its performers. The cast is comprised of a group of women from all over the East Coast who have combined their voices to embrace the struggle of their respective lives and rise from it. The one-hour original show was written by everyone, for everyone. The stories that surface are all true, dealing with sexism, racism, body image, sexuality and domestic violence, as well as stories of cultural pride, identity and personal strength. "Where the Women Are" opened in New York City in December 2001, and since then they have been performing and working with NYC teens. In addition, they went on a recent tour of Maine, where they performed at high schools and ACTS Theater. A special performance by two Philadelphia dancers, Devynnstration and Erin Sullivan, will start off the evening with a dance piece that challenges the roles of women in hip-hop music videos. “Where the Women Are,” Fri. May 3, 8 p.m., $5-$50 sliding scale donation, Ethical Society, 1906 Rittenhouse Square, for more info e-mail arfgny@hotmail.com. -- Respond to this article in our Forums -- click to jump there
