Breaking the Mold

Philadelphia's art scene is like an old married couple's sex life. After doing it missionary style, in the bedroom, on the same day of the week for years and years, it has become evident that all the magic has faded and a rut has taken hold. Sure it's comfortable, familiar and safe, but where has that sense of adventure gone? So they decide to take action.

InLiquid, a Web community dedicated to networking Philadelphia artists and galleries, is the sex therapist there to talk us through this revelation with its roundtable discussion "Artists Outside the Box." InLiquid staffers Joan Smith (a CP contributor), James Rosenthal and Rachel Zimmerman realized that there are pockets of artists and curators spread throughout the city doing innovative and independent projects who are hell-bent on spicing it up. Gathering Philadelphia heavyweights Alex Baker, Larry Mangel, Richard Torchia and Shelley Spector and curators Nick Cassway, Kevin Reay and Scott Rigby together for a chat is one step in the process of artistic rejuvenation.

What InLiquid hopes is that this clash between established energy and new ideas will help Philadelphia start a riot of its own. It wants to plot how, through independent projects, the city's art scene can grab the attention of outsiders and get in on the international dialogue of contemporary art. The event also gives audience members a chance to speak their mind and gather together at the end for food, drink and more lively discussion. So if you want in, show up.
