A question for local dance fans: Ever notice that a fair number of the movement artists you see on stage are not terribly tall? Well, Tina Bracciale has. And she's gathered a bunch of her fellow vertically-challenged dancer/choreographers for a program titled 5'5" and Under. If the title sounds humorous, that's intended -- the program is designed as a fun, eclectic celebration of dance -- but make no mistake, Bracciale is serious about not letting any ringers slip onto the roster. In fact, she went around measuring people to ensure they fit the bill. The evening features work by Cheryl Carson, Jessica Franklin, Eva Gholson, Emily Hubler, David Konyk, Jeanine Shoemaker, Rebecca Sloan, Kate Watson-Wallace and Ron Wood. Most are known for their participation in various local ensembles like Group Motion, The Bald Mermaids, Winged Woman Dance Company and Rennie Harris Puremovement, but here they will strut their own stuff. One-minute films by Scott Johnston, who recorded the individual artists getting philosophical about dance, complement each piece. The selections present abstract and playful dance, and Bracciale promises there's no angst-ridden postmodern material. "I really wanted to do a show where people can just go and be entertained," she says.
