Just before Richard Baluyut put Versus on the backburner, fans got something to remember them by in the form of an Insound Tour Support EP, Drawn and Quartered, with each member taking a bow. James Baluyut's contribution, "She's So Lost," led to a Teenbeat deal. After five years of slinging guitar in his big brother's band, he plays just about everything from skittery drums to sleepy piano on the uneven Self-Titled Long-Playing Debut from +/- (pronounced "plus minus"). "The Queen of Detroit" tops the trio of Versus sound-a-likes, while "Declaration of Independence" and the Björk-esque "All I Do" hit the highs and lows of experimentation. But sensitive pop songs like "Yo Yo Yo (Please Don't Fall in Love)" and "The Industrial Revolution" are why the ladies love cool James. (His looks don't hurt, either.) +/-'s live incarnation, which includes Margaret McCartney (ex-Tuscadero) on bass and Versus drummer Patrick Ramos on guitar and keyboards, should add sinew without sacrificing heart.
