The Gossip

As the sticky, sweaty days of summer grow nearer, it’s time to break the hot music -- the sort of songs that draw sweat out of every pore until your skin’s glistening and damp hair clings to the back of your neck. Those in the mood to raise their temperature a few degrees might do well to check out The Gossip, whose live shows leave entire rooms drenched in their own juices. (No surprise that their latest Kill Rock Stars release is titled Arkansas Heat.) The Olympia-via-Arkansas threesome generates sizzle that’s usually only felt on the doggiest of their native state’s dog days. Minimalist instrumentation swaggers through a chaotic amalgam of blues, punk and Southern charm; lead singer/whirling dervish Beth Ditto hip-checks and writhes and kicks and growls, soaking her shirt right through to the bra, switching the gender conventions of the blues around so she’s the one in charge -- and she’s setting the heat to a full-on blast.

Tue., June 4, 7 p.m., $7-$8, with Mr. Quintron and Miss Pussycat, The Chromatics and Newton, Rotunda, 4012 Walnut St., 215-629-0614, http://www.r5productions.com.
