Davis Redford Triad/Primordial Undermind/Third Troll

Close listening is one of a zillion sub-genres of electronic music, accomplished by delicately “painting” pre-loaded laptop sounds. Fans of experimental music have been so fascinated with these Europeans and their PowerBooks of late that it’s time they’re reminded about the decades’ worth of guitar and analogue synth freaks who’ve been doing the same thing under the guise (and influence) of psychedelics. The pedigrees of the bands on this bill are pretty impressive. Third Troll is most of Bardo Pond, but this incarnation is making a sharp, structure-less departure from the Pond’s previous output. Primordial Undermind is guitarist Eric Arn’s post-Crystallized Movements project, which is more space than rock. And the Triad boys have worked with the re-animated Faust and neo-krauts Hochenkeit. If you want to listen closely to something, try a wah-wah sax or tablas and tambourines through a delay pedal or the racket a guy can make kneeling on the floor with a guitar and a screwdriver.

Thu., May 30, 8 p.m., $7, The Balcony at the Trocadero, 10th and Arch sts., 215-922-LIVE, www.thetroc.com.
