Dick Dale

Friends dubbed him the “King of Surf Guitar.” Guitar Player magazine named him the “Father of Heavy Metal.” Not bad for a man in his 60s, but is it true? You can be sure of two things: Dick Dale plays his Fender Stratocaster upside down, and he does it well. While many mainstream folks think of The Beach Boys when they hear the term “surf music,” it is Dale who invented it -- and one of the only musicians in this classification that actually surfs. If that’s not enough to get you to Dale’s show at the North Star, then know this: He will probably do a rendition of “Miserlou,” the title theme from Pulp Fiction.

Thu., May 30, 8:30 p.m., $20, with Mondo Topless, North Star, 27th and Poplar sts., 215-922-LIVE, www.northstarbar.com.
