Love Songs

City Paper asked Christine Andreas, Donald Smith and Wesla Whitfield to pick a great cabaret song and tell us why it works.

Andreas: A new song called "Love Is Good" by Martin Silvestri. I sang it at the White House, when I needed a song to keep me calm! That's what it does. It's wonderful, calming. When I sing it, people come up to me and say how wonderful it is to be reminded that love is a good thing. We sometimes forget that.

Whitfield: I’d love to do 15 albums of Lorenz Hart’s lyrics, because he tells the truth! [I force her to pick one song.] “Don’t Blame Me,” by Fields and McHugh. I can sing it from my toes up, without any effort, and everyone in the room can plug into it from their own life experience.

Smith: “My Heart Stood Still,” by Rodgers and Hart. I love the story it tells, so simple and clear: “I saw your eyes, now castles rise in Spain.” To do all that, to tell a story so simply and completely… that’s art!
