The Mann opens its summer season of theater, dance and music in the great outdoors this week with two classics. First up, it's Gershwin's Porgy and Bess, featuring standards like "Summertime," and "I Got Plenty O' Nuttin'." This "folk opera," based on DuBose Heyward's novel, tells the story of Porgy, a Charleston man who witnesses a murder, and Bess, the victim's lover. You can pretty much guess what happens between the two of them. The title roles will be sung by Brian Gibson, Jerris Cates (Bess on Friday night) and Philly girl Iris Fairfax (Bess on Saturday night).
Later in the week, the New York Gilbert & Sullivan Players stop in town for a production of H.M.S. Pinafore. Even G&S neophytes are probably familiar with this most famous of their works, full of ditties that stick in your head like "I am the very model of a modern major-general." The New York G&S Players, led by Albert Bergeret, have been performing Gilbert and Sullivan's classics and lesser-known works for the past 25 years, so diehard fans and casual viewers alike should be satisfied. With two undeniable standard-setting works, the Mann season is off to a good start.
Porgy and Bess, Fri.-Sat., June 14-15, 8:30 p.m., $38-$58; H.M.S. Pinafore, Tue., June 18, 8:30 p.m., $25-$35, Mann Music Center, 52nd and Parkside Ave., 215-893-1999.
