As a band member (The Coctails, The Sea and Cake) and collaborator (with Edith Frost, Will Oldham, Sam Prekop) -- not to mention comic book illustrator -- Archer Prewitt has created a substantial résumé. After years of building up a backlog of songs Prewitt made his solo debut with In the Sun and followed with it up with White Sky, the Gerroa Songs EP and the recently released Three (Thrill Jockey). As on previous albums, he takes the '70s singer/songwriter mold and injects vocal and orchestral arrangements à la Cardinal or The Zombies. With a revolving cast of supporters helping out (including Kelly Hogan, members of Seam, Brokeback, Joan of Arc, the Mekons and ex-Coctail Mark Greenberg), Prewitt seems to be refining his solo modus operandi. Though not as devil-may-care or instantly enjoyable as his work in The Coctails, nor as soothing or relaxed as The Sea and Cake, Three may be the truest representation of Prewitt's abilities.
