Phylum: Resurrected
Class: Loopy
Plumage: Hair varies from Lauryn Hill’s little oval-ish puffball to Outkast’s Rick James-ian shiny locks to ?uestlove’s big round puffball with a comb in it.
Migratory habits: There’s no discernable pattern: From ’96 to ’98 the tour traveled the country every summer, then disappeared until now. Apparently they were waiting for Erykah Badu to stop being famous.
Defining Behavior: Hometown heroes The Roots go crazy on the mic full-band style, Outkast act crazy and look cool, and Hill, as evidenced by her recent MTV Unplugged disaster, is just plain nuts. Hopefully those voices in her head will start saying, “I wonder how Wyclef is doing these days?”
Adaptive Ability: Hill’s reincarnation as an acoustic singer-songwriter indicates poor judgment. Her miseducation continues. She may be this monster’s weak spot.
Special Powers: The Roots’ Scratch can mimic a turntable with stunning accuracy. And, despite her current distresses, Hill can still kill, however softly, with her song.
Weakness: This appears to be the only hip-hop tour without a gangsta (except for Big Boi of Outkast, whose resumé includes part-time pimping). Bottom line: Smokin’ is unarmed.
Field Notes: Outkast’s appearance on the Scooby-Doo soundtrack may mean Dré and Boi have metamorphosed from freaky to cutesy. It’s been more than two years since their last record, so if the Dirty South is rising again, it’s taking its time.Expected Arrival Point: Thu., Aug. 1, 6 p.m., $29.50 (lawn) and $45 (reserved), Tweeter Center, Mickle Blvd. and Riverside Dr., Camden, 215-336-2000.
