As the singer and songwriter in front of the loud, melodic, sharp and endearing pop-punk band Swisher, Sara Weaver had a way of pulling you in with smart-ass lyrics to sing along with and rock riffs to move to. The way she unapologetically and cleverly spoke her mind in her music (she had a knack for catchy, snake-tongued anthems to ex-boyfriends or anybody else who tried to do her wrong), you would probably think she made some enemies, but the outpouring of support for her at the benefit shows following her diagnosis with leukemia in September of 2000 -- raised some $10,000 -- and proved the love, respect and admiration this town had for "the Weave" and her work. She lost the battle in June.
Activism was among Weaver's many passions -- she helped raise awareness and money for AIDS and lesbian and gay civil rights organizations. Even while in the hospital, Weaver planned to take up the cause of the bone marrow registry (which is always in need of donors, and especially African-Americans). Now her friends and family are picking up the fight and celebrating her life with Sara Weaver's Rock-n-Roll Memorial, a 10-band tribute concert to raise money for National Bone Marrow Registry awareness (admission is free, donations are requested). Trying their able hands at Weaver's music will be Liquid Action, O Mighty Isis, Matt Pond and Brian McTear, Thorazine, Midnight Brown, Marc Beck, Brendan McTear, Julie Davids, the Weaverbs and the remaining members of Swisher, reunited as U-wisher. In addition, Weaver will be celebrated with audio and video footage from her live performances and "Live Weaver Karaoke." For more information on the bone marrow registry, go to www.bmtnews.org. Learn more about Sara Weaver at the Weave Report at www.goswisher.com. And stay tuned: Some of Weaver's friends are working on publishing a cookbook of her favorite vegetarian recipes that she worked on while in the hospital.
