Hip-Hop Happenings

It’s unofficially DJ week in the city! Jeff, Cash, Cosmo, LowBudget, K-Swizzle -- K who? Read on, young’un. It’s just a two-pack this week, but they’re too good to miss.

Last week, DJs Cosmo Baker and LowBudget kicked off Budge’s new weekly: The Hit, every Thursday at St. Jack’s. This week, they rotate alongside a famous Philly spinning export. Nope, not Jazzy Jeff, it’s DJ Cash Money. He’ll be wrecking the ones and twos like it’s 1988. Here’s the top five reasons to go: 1. He has, umm, say, about 10,000 records; 2. He’s the first inductee to the DJ Hall of Fame; 3. He might spin the first record he ever bought, Grandmaster Flash’s “Super Rappin’”; 4. He’s spun records in more than 20 countries; 5. He commands this fancy title, “The World’s Greatest DJ.” Fri., Aug. 9, La Tazza, 108 Chestnut St., 215-922-7322, 10 p.m.-2 a.m., $8 before 11 p.m., $10 after. K-C Bajai, a.k.a. DJ K-Swizzle, the Audiogliphix Magazine founder and modern-day renaissance man, swoops down on St. Jack’s for a monthlong residency with Audio August. Kicking off AA’s first night from 9 to 11 p.m., Chuck Duquesne, host of The Khyber’s weekly open mic, Philadelphonic, shares his collection of vintage 45s. From 11 p.m.-12:30 a.m., Inner City Live resident DJ Starchild spins rare grooves, hip-hop, acid jazz and house. Then closer DJ Kevin Rucker blasts through the speakers with deep, soulful classic house. (Yep, you’ve seen him at Silk City and City Paper’s ’00 and ’02 Pitch Control competitions.) All that said and done, get yo booty on the dance floor -- well there really isn’t a dance floor, but you know, just do it! Make room, or you will be stepped on. Hint: There are free giveaways from Ropeadope Records to the best rump shakers. (If ya didn’t know, now ya do.). Fri., Aug. 9, St. Jack’s, 45 S. Third St., 215-238-9353, www.agmusicmag.com, 9 p.m.-2 a.m., $Free! And don’t forget to say congrats to Mr. Bajai on the second anniversary of Audio. All hail the terrible twos.

Oh yeah, cop The Magnificent, DJ Jazzy Jeff’s new masterpiece. Something different. Get on the line and request the first hot-to-death single, “For da Love of the Game,” featuring Baby Blak and Pauly Yamz. In the immortal words of the world’s greatest MC, Fabolous, “Holla back youngin’/ Woop, woop.” Sike. (applesz6@citypaper.net)
