For celeb archivists who stash every detail of a movie cast, their history and their subsequent demise, Grease is a brilliant example of how hard stars have to fight to shake off certain associations. Travolta? Though always more famous for Saturday Night Fever, the fact that he jumped into Grease the very next year set the precedent for repetitive casting that dogged him until Pulp Fiction. Olivia Newton-John should, by rights, be remembered as a breast cancer awareness ambassador, yet still people ask her to pull off "Summer Nights" -- and Stockard Channing has finally graduated from Pink Lady to First Lady with West Wing fame.
And that leaves Kenickie. Yes, Jeff Conaway may have had more luck than the other three in shedding his T-bird image, which was arguably eclipsed by his role as Bobby in Taxi. So it may seem a touch awkward that he's coming to town this week, to adjudicate the costume contest as part of Sing-A-Long Grease in its extended run at the Prince. Maybe he's just skipping through to bask in the peculiar brand of doppelganger adoration adopted by Sing-A-Long fans. OK, it's a faint possibility. More likely, it's a gentle indication that his incarnation as the best friend with the leathers and the "25-cent insurance policy" is how he wishes us to remember him. So be it.
