And the hits keep coming. Last week was another busy one at the Inquirer. The biggest move:

city editor Craig McCoy is stepping down after just seven months. McCoy says he’s looking forward to returning to his former position as an investigative projects reporter. “I’m going back to my old job. That’s the skinny on that,” he says. Effective Sept. 3, Chris Hepp becomes the new city editor. Hepp, who has been at the paper since 1986, says that while he still enjoys reporting, he believes that editing is his calling. “I’m very happy about the possibility of helping to direct the city staff,” Hepp says. “If I hold up my end of the deal, everybody’ll look good.”

Inky sports writer and columnist Claire Smith has changed directions and will now step into a management role as an assistant sports editor. "I feel very much at peace with my decision," says Smith, who has been writing full-time for various newspapers since 1982. "I may write again, but this is what I want to do right now. This position is a good segue into something different."
