It is estimated that billions of dollars are lost to superstitious belief every Friday the 13th. "Friggatriskaidekaphobes" -- those with a deep-seated fear of that coincidental date -- are reluctant to make major purchases, travel or attend work. So what do you do if the sound of a breaking mirror puts you in a panic? Are you willing to shake off your Old World beliefs?
The Freethought Society of Greater Philadelphia contends that superstitions are complete nonsense; to help the anxious few, they'll be poking fun at misplaced fears large and small during their Anti-Superstitions Carnival, held on the fateful day itself. Of course, their doctrine of rational thought offers no supernaturally easy answers -- which is what most superstitious notions provide. Still, FSGP have devised games showing how these beliefs began: How about Pin the Tail on the Ass-trologer, or smashing a Leprechaun piñata? Find yourself a black cat, ride to the 13th floor and debunk some myths for yourself.
