Steuben to Conquer

If there is any simple pleasure in this world, it is enjoying the celebratory noise of a lively parade pass you by as you contemplate exactly how different your life would be had it not been for Baron Friedrich von Steuben. For those of us historically inclined, von Steuben, a former general in the Prussian army, is memorably known for training the American patriots at Valley Forge and creating a uniformed army-training manual that is still used to this day. If not for his eye for formation, perhaps we would all be forced to watch EastEnders and trade in our mostly physical humor for a more conservative, dry wit. And for this, we salute you, Mr. von Steuben. In accordance with this month's Oktoberfest celebrations, Philadelphia's 32nd Annual Steuben Parade will march in a uniformed formation of fun around the vicinity of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway this Saturday. Among those representing a healthier incarnation of German pride will be das Wehrbereichsmusikkorps III and aus Erfurt Oberschlesische, as well as several other of our most beloved German organizations. While he lacks the popularity and cause for drunkenness which fellow parade-champ St. Patrick brought to this country, Von Steuben did come from Europe with a written recommendation from that lovable lightning-chaser, Benjamin Franklin. Beat that, St. Patty.

Philadelphia’s 32nd Annual German-American Steuben Parade, Sat., Sept. 28, noon. Formation will be at 20th and Benjamin Franklin Parkway, before making its way south on 20th. There will be a viewing stand at Logan Circle. For more information, check out www.steubenparade.com.
