It's been a productive September for The Bouncing Souls and Anti-Flag. The two bands jump-started the month by kicking out some stellar new cuts and covers (of Sticks and Stones, The Buzzcocks, each other) for the latest installment of the BYO Records split series. Last week they co-headlined a handful of Midwestern dates on the rotating-lineup Plea for Peace/Take Action Tour, and have now swung back East for a round of right-coast gigs before each heads back into the studio. A two-night stand at the Troc should provide a considerably different atmosphere than the last time the Souls (pictured, left) were in town and packed the Electric Factory, and it remains to be seen how well their feel-good pop-punk will jive in concert with Flag's didactic political thrash. But if the split is any indication, the former plays yin to the latter's yang, with introspective musings balancing out leftist rhetoric. As tempting as it may be to attend both nights, if you must pick only one, pick Sunday when Philly-rock buzz generators Knives Out will open the show before retreating into the crowd to slap their stickers on whatever surface is available.
Sat., Sept. 28, 7 p.m., $13, with The Arsons and Pipedown; Sun., Sept. 29, 7 p.m., $13, with Pipedown and Knives Out, The Trocadero, 1003 Arch St., 215-922-LIVE, www.thetroc.com.
