Hill of Beans

Mmm-mm! Chili. Perhaps the most deliciously contrary of foodstuffs, chili is both a treat for the taste buds and a potential hell for the digestive system. It is all things to all diners, as condiment, appetizer, side dish or entree. On Saturday, this wonderfood takes center stage at the Philadelphia Park Raceway in the Second Annual Philly Chili Cookoff.

Organized by WXTU 92.5 FM, the spicy competition offers chili chefs from the Delaware Valley an opportunity to display their culinary skills and mouth-watering wares while supporting two local charities. Proceeds from the competition benefit area firefighters and the Temple University Hospital burns unit. Teams of four will compete for trophies in two categories: best chili and best chili booth. Amateur cooks are invited to enter the Philly Choice competition, while the Firefighter's Challenge is open to Delaware Valley firefighters and EMTs. Judges will also crown a Mr. and Ms. Philly Pepper, with honors bestowed on the contestants with the most entertaining costumes and cooking techniques. As a musical accompaniment, Tim McGraw, Martina McBride, Eric Heatherly, Sixwire and Pinmonkey will be performing throughout the day as the chili simmers. For chili enthusiasts, this is the best chance to test one's gastrointestinal fortitude for a good cause.

Second Annual Philly Chili Cookoff, Sat., Oct. 5, 9 a.m., $45.00/$55.00 (at gate), Philadelphia Park Raceway, 3001 Street Rd., Bensalem. Tickets: 215-336-2000 or www.ticketmaster.com. Information and registration forms for chefs at www.wxtu.com.
