Mi Studio, Su Studio

Once a year, the people who create the paintings, sculptures and photographs we love most let us in on the mystery of the making. Philadelphia Artists' Open Studio Tours allow the public to gawk at the process, the product and the producer all at once and free of charge -- a thing of rare beauty, indeed. In two weekends and geographic areas, art lovers have the opportunity to take these self-guided tours, where they can meet, speak with and gush to artists working in all media. This weekend, head west of Broad to check out abstract painter Douglas Witmer's space or Tremain Smith's beeswax-and-oil works in West Philly, the sculptural furniture of Jack Larimore, Matthew Courtney's weird outsize clay bowling pins and the works of the Greene Street Artists Corp. in Germantown. Next weekend, artists east of Broad Street open their studios, including documentary photographer James Abbott, multimedia collage artists Tom Judd and Kiki Gaffney and master of the faux-finish furniture Bill Russell. Some organizations, like the Greater Philadelphia Tourism and Marketing Corp. and the University City Arts League, arrange bus tours as well. And of course, the artists would love to do business with you one-on-one if you simply must not part with something you see tucked behind a pedestal or peeking out from a tarp. Just remember, this is someone's private property, so keep your hands to yourself and enjoy the view.

Open Studio Tour, Oct. 12-13 (west of Broad St.), Oct. 19-20 (east of Broad St.) 215-683-2084 or www.philaopenstudios.com for more information.
