The trend in pop media, generally (and print specifically), is toward the small, the quick, and the shallow. The theory is that attention spans are getting shorter and today's reader/viewer/consumer doesn't have time to wait for the payoff. That's what Arthur is up against. Just about every article in the new, full-color, nationally distributed newspaper -- so named because, among other reasons "it's long for art,'" -- is longer than 1,000 words. The brainchild of ex-Philadelphian/current New Yorker Laris Kreslins, publisher, and L.A.-based editor Jay Babcock (who have not actually met, as yet), Arthur's first issue is smart-star-studded, with articles and artistic contributions by the likes of Spike Jonze, Thurston Moore, Alan Moore, Matt Hoffman, Paul Moody, Dave Berman and Neil Hamburger (doing an advice column, if you can believe that). This Friday Kreslins and co. will celebrate the launch at The North Star. Like Arthur, the Pabst Blue Ribbon is free.
Launch party, Fri., Oct. 11, 6-8 p.m., The North Star, 27th and Poplar sts., 215-684-0808.
