Teaming up on what could be cheekily referred to as the “Rock Exile Tour” are No Doubt and Garbage, two bands whose comely lead singers frequently served as cover enticement for hyperbolic screeds on rock’s girl-style refashioning. But the winds of trend stories blew another way, and that revolution was quickly deemed over -- and the modern rock playlist slots for XX chromosomes whose bands could write a lick of melody were rebuilt into a tree house for boys only. But what these boys kicked out in their panty raid wasn’t just girls, it was melody, and nothing proved that better than the stiletto-sharp pop hooks swiping out of No Doubt’s and Garbage’s latest releases. Even the Gwen-hatas of years past couldn’t help getting into the groove of the single “Hella Good,” a shiny, shiny update of rubber-bracelet candy (complete with bubble-popping synths!) that dances rings around those silly, lonely whiners, taunting ’em with a hip-swivel, giving ’em a tweak on the nose.
No Doubt and Garbage with The Distillers, Thu., Oct. 17, 7:30 p.m. $35, First Union Center, 3601 S. Broad St., 215-336-3600.
