October 31-November 6, 2002
music
It’s scary how many great events are afoot for Halloween, a far cry from last year’s tragic tone. My rundown for Oct. 31: Carlota Ttendant and the kids of Big Mess hook up with the Philadelphia Orchestra at the Kimmel. You can dig World Fusion’s “Fidelio” bash with Lorne and Adrock, or check in with Jurassic 5 and Schoolly D at E-Factory -- then go home with Schoolly for his horror-house party with Jeff “Met” Theis (e-mail chordmagazine666@aol for e-vite). Check out Cozmic Cat and Jugo’s costume SoMa jam (more on those two in a sec). Then on Nov. 1, go see sassy Helen Back at 847 N. Franklin.… While Jugo stays busy DJ-booking Denim (opening soon), Coz is doing likewise with Avram Hornik’s La Colombe-neighbor nightspot Loies, gathering spinners with resident Loies/Soma bartender Thomas. Other Cozmic news: Cat (whose lascivious sounds aroused the charitable beast in “Shirt Off Your Back” co-chair Nicole Cashman at the Breast Health Institute gala/auction; she sold hers for over $1500!) is up for G-Room’s “Glamor-Puss” gal-weekly at Bump starting Nov. 5.… Along with Dave Frank/Bryan Dilworth/Steve Simons’ Royal Tavern opening in my Bella Vista, neighboring Low just opened a second floor with a skyline view. And rock-star stylist Machele (for Burning Brides and visiting indie pals) and Low bartender Lezlee grand-opened Le Bomb Chele Hair and Body Boutique for cuts, massage, clothes and jewelry at 1134 S. Ninth.… WhoWhatWhere: M. meet Kevin. That was the salutation when Sharon Pinkenson brought M. Night Shyamalan to meet Jersey boy director Kevin Smith and Ben Affleck at the Naval Base. Brendan and Kasey Olkus took Taye Diggs to Morimoto the same night Liv Tyler ate there, mere moments after No Doubt and Stone Temple Pilots sushi-supped. STP bassist Robert DeLeo and his missus shopped Taji Modern (62 N. Third) for its 20th-century design art glass, choosing Scandinavian glass vases. (Taji Modern also got busy for Jamaaladeen Tacuma’s performance at Sun In Leo/1616’s “Styles” party with K-Vaughn scarves and such in the house. Eve, sporting long blond locks, and two pals were at Stephen Starr’s other Op-Japanese spot Pod Saturday, noshing on pecan tart with pecan ice cream and choco-bourbon truffles, sushi, sake and kobe beef.… Carl Michaels (when not busy covering for the touring Pete Moss at SoMa Sundays) spins Tony Sparacino’s new every-first-Saturday “Score,” starting Nov. 2.… The Brians: while McTear hits Tritone Nov. 3, Seymour debuts When I Was Blonde (my fave CD title!), recorded at Sound Gun, at Silk City Nov. 6.… When not toppling Strokes with beer, Maxx Incognegro’s bartending for his legal defense fund (no crime, just a fun idea for a party) at Liquid Blue Mon., Nov. 4 with DJ Smoove.… Rumor: Filo’s closed and emptied of all booze by L&I. Dag.… Lance Holton is the new exec. chef at Avenue B.… The kids of Sugar Town now book DJs and femme-performers into Doc Watson’s every Thursday, Friday and occasional Tuesdays whilst (for now) holding onto their Balcony slot (next up, Nov. 29 with X’s X’s and The English System).… King Britt brings Nu Concept night to Pod, Nov. 4, with Dozia, Justin Paul and Irfane.… Not dead: Nov. 1 at Five Spot, sublime local ’90s faves The Ocean Blue.… Mikey Reis of Valsalva is nearly done his solo CD, recorded by Sean Kilroy, featuring Mike Morpurgo and Josh Ostrander of Laguardia.… Seventy-five-year-old preppy-apparel maker/film producer Max L. Raab and photographer Seymour Mednick -- director and co-producers of the Mummer documentary STRUT! -- will release the Rittenhouse label soundtrack to their film at the Roxy Nov. 5, as well as partake in the Rehobeth Beach Film Festival Nov. 7-9.… DJ Kenny Meez and clothing designer Sang host Nov. 1’s promo event at Ubiq (10th and Market, lower level, Gallery 2) where they’ll give away stuff from lines like t5soul and lrg.… Sony/Epic may be hosting their “Live In Philly” audition showcase via Promoter magazine with prizes at $1,000 and counting. But they ain’t got Lauren Hart (the nice one), Boyz II Men (the sonic perfectionists) and yours truly, A.D. (the mean asshole), doing Philadelphian Idol for Fox Philly TV at locations like Franklin Mills and The Arden Theatre starting Nov. 1. Hey boys and girls, come down and be ridiculed in person. It’ll be fun.
