Everyone Has 15 Minutes

If Chie Harashima appears to be reveling in her own femininity, well, it’s been a long time coming. Growing up in Tokyo, she longed to be like other girls: As they rejoiced in their gorgeous looks, she knew only her failings. So her new paintings, which characterize her as a voluptuous, cheeky pin-up, celebrate her form, as well as her ability to finally look good in a bikini -- with the application of careful brushstrokes.

As with her earlier collection of self-portraits depicting herself as Impie, a superhero, Harashima’s model of goal-focused art -- realizing her very greatest dreams on the canvas -- absolutely feels good to see and to star in. Yet, as her head tilts knowingly sideways, her eyes, feline and questioning, point to what she’s learned over those early years of self-torment: Time in the limelight is brief, after such a long wait in the dark.

Through Nov. 7, Spector, 510 Bainbridge St., 215-238-0840.
