Lizards and turtles and snakes -- Oh my! If you're in the market for a new pet, but find the neighbor's yelping dog annoying and your grandmother's antisocial cat creepy and boring, then check out the North American Reptile Breeders Conference and Trade Show. You'll be able to select your new best friend from a variety of cold-blooded creatures, with everything from exotic frogs to tortoises up for sale by more than 100 dealers. Accessories will also be available, so you'll be able to ensure your new reptilian buddy will be provided with all amenities. Unfortunately, there won't be any talking geckos available for purchase.
Once you've found that perfect sssomeone to keep you company or have grown tired of browsing through all the scales and tails, check out Jim Nesci's reptile show. Watch children ride on the back of an 8-foot, 225-pound North American alligator named Bubba, or grab Samantha -- a 16-foot, 160-pound Burmese python -- by the tail. Animal Planet's Mark O'Shea will also be on hand to sign autographs and, if you're lucky, share a story or two about his personal encounters with these creatures in the wild. (O'Shea will also be the keynote speaker at a fundraising event on Saturday evening.) For a more in-depth look at these creatures' natural habitats, Blue Chameleon Ventures' Bill Love will present "Discovering Madagascar's Herpetofaunal Diversity" for those hardcore lovers of all things herpetological. So unless you have an Indiana Jonesian fear of things that slither, take this opportunity to get in touch with your reptilian side. Hissss.
Sat.-Sun., Nov. 16-17, 10 a.m.-5 p.m., $8-$15 (weekend pass), Valley Forge Convention Center, 1160 First Ave., King of Prussia, 708-363-3431, www.reptileconference.com.
