For the past 20 years, as fast as the Broadway machine can churn out new musicals, adaptations and revivals, Forbidden Broadway has been coming up with ways to mock it all. Started in 1982 by Gerard Alessandrini, Forbidden Broadway began as a nightclub act but has evolved into a steady gig for its cast, a national touring show and a slew of recordings. FB has won Obie and Drama Desk awards, to name only a couple, but their true measure of success is the fact that many of the big-name stars they lampoon show up to see what FB has come up with to trash their latest work. From oldies like Fiddler on the Roof to phenomenons like Rent to newer hits like Mamma Mia! and The Producers, Forbidden Broadway has a parody, and they also make time to skewer some of the big names in the Broadway biz (Liza, Carol Channing, Babs). Though some of their routines fall flat, FB mostly hits a perfect note falling somewhere between admiration and ridicule. FB brings its schtick (promised pieces include mockeries of Oklahoma!, Aida, Contact, The Full Monty, The Lion King, Cabaret, Chicago, Fiddler and Mamma Mia!, plus some surprises) to Rutgers this week.
Sat., Dec. 7, 8 p.m., $30-$35, Rutgers Camden Center for the Arts, Third and Pearl sts., Camden, 856-225-6271.
