Beauty and the Beast

Landis & Co. Theatre of Magic has been putting on productions for children since the late '70s, when Landis Smith and his wife, Jennifer, created a family business dedicated to touring the world with innovative programming for kids. In 2001, the company changed its name to Enchantment Theatre Co., marking a decision to expand its boundaries and simultaneously offer more here in Philadelphia. The Smiths are still co-artistic directors, but the new name seemed necessary to indicate the shift from family project to non-profit local theater entity. The company will still tour regularly, with work developed over the past few years integrating puppets, mask work, mime and other theatrical touches with the magic. This week at Plays & Players Theatre, Enchantment opens a production of Beauty and the Beast. They toured the show, which uses life-size puppets and freaky masks to tell the classic tale, from 1997-99, performing it in 120 cities in the U.S. Now it's come home for a monthlong run. It may be labeled as kid-friendly fare, but Enchantment hopes to get kids of all ages wrapped up in the magic.

Through Dec. 29, call for times, $12-$26, Plays & Players Theatre, 1714 Delancey St., 215-569-9700.
