Show Me the Monkeys

Still agonizing over the perfect gift for that special friend, loved one or stuffed animal fetishist in your life? Fear not -- you can dodge the holiday banana skin this Friday when the Institute of Contemporary Art presents an evening of monkey-themed madness. The highlight of this swinging event will be a signing of sock monkeys (200 out of 1,863), a gorgeous portrait book by frequent Mütter Museum photographer Arne Svenson showcasing an assortment of the titular knitted objects from the vast collection of Ron Warren. But the simian silliness doesn’t stop there! Students from Drexel’s College of Media Arts & Design will display primate playthings they’ve designed for charity, while vintage sock monkeys will be available for purchase at the poo-flingingly low price of $20 bucks each. The festivities will also feature monkey-inspired music (so it’s probably safe to assume that you’ll hear “Alley Oop” and the occasional Davy Jones opus), as well as plenty of banana daiquiris. If all of this monkeying around tires you out, take a break and check out ICA’s “Pictures, Patents, Monkeys and More … On Collecting” exhibition, which features several pieces from Warren’s collection and runs through Dec. 15.

Arne Svenson and Ron Warren will sign sock monkeys (200 out of 1,863), Fri., Dec. 13, 6-8 p.m., $2-$3, Institute of Contemporary Art, 118 S. 36th St., 215-898-7108, www.icaphila.org.
