SPECTOR Gallery owner Shelley Spector recently discovered a new gallery in New York, "Red Dot," which specialized in pieces of art that sell for $5,000 or less. This "deal" gave Spector a chuckle. For the past few years she has been opening up her gallery for a weekend every December to hold her own "Red Dot" show, where all of her art goes on sale for $100 or less. Spector jokingly asserts that the NY gallery must have gotten the idea, and the name, from her popular event. Well, copycats aside, the original is back this weekend, with work like a hooked rug with an image of Donovan McNabb by Ohio artist Whitney Lee and pieces from tons of artists featured in Spector's latest show "Philly," where folks like Paul Santoleri, CW Wells, Adam Wallacavage, Sara Lee and Andrew Jeffrey Wright paid a clever homage to our fair city. After Red Dot, SPECTOR Gallery goes on hiatus through February (it will open by appointment during the next two months, though). SPECTOR's only taking cash for this event, so get to an ATM and go buy some real art for the holidays.
Fri., Dec. 20, 6-10 p.m.; Sat.-Sun., Dec. 21-22, noon-5 p.m., SPECTOR Gallery, 510 Bainbridge St., 215-238-0840.
