Since its stubbly, 100-attendee start at the Tiki Club in the '90s, Dan Cronin and Rob Molinaro's annual Hair O' The Dog Black Tie Charity Gala -- now in its ninth year -- has become the first official gala of the New Year and the toughest to top over the next 11 and a half months. As well as being the first place to show off the swell outfit your significant other gave you, the Hair -- estimated this year to draw a 6,000-strong crowd -- has function, raising monies for charities as wide-ranging as AIDS research and 9/11 relief funds. Next year, you'll even see where the money went, as HOTD's proceeds go to the Friends of Memorial Hall, the famous Fairmount Park facility where the dogs will raise hell this weekend. And no Hair-y black-tie, top-shelf drink-down would be complete without the Dog's noisiest accoutrements: the music. For 2003, along with a loud sports auction, the charity ball hosts the Zappa-inspired Mr. Greengenes, house-headed DJ Michael Myers, favorite golden oldie Jerry Blavat, and a smattering of rockers and such. And no, Bow Wow Wow will not be in attendance.
Ninth Annual Hair O' The Dog Black Tie Charity Gala, Sat., Jan. 4, 9 p.m. till 'the dogs stop barkin',¨ $85 per person, Memorial Hall in Fairmount Park, 42nd and Parkside sts. For tickets, call 866-2-GET-DOG or 215-336-2000 or visit www.telebenefits.com.
