By The Book

People's Light & Theatre Company begins the second half of its season with the Pulitzer-nominated In The Blood, Suzan-Lori Parks' take on The Scarlet Letter. (Parks won the Pulitzer in 2002 for Topdog/Underdog.) In The Blood tells the tale of Hester La Negrita, a homeless single mother of five children. Roslyn Ruff (Hester) and Robert Beatty join PLT resident company members Larry Grant Malvern, Cathy Simpson, Peter DeLaurier and Mary Elizabeth Scallen to play all the roles, including Hester's lovers, friends and children. Directed by PLT's artistic director Abigail Adams, the show is by turns bitingly funny and tragic. Parks isn't done with Nathaniel Hawthorne just yet; her second shot at reinterpretation, the hilariously titled Fucking A, will have a run at New York City's Public Theater in the spring.

In The Blood, Jan. 8-Feb. 9, $25-$38, People's Light & Theater Co., 39 Conestoga Rd., Malvern, 610-644-3500.
