Since 1996's genre-defining Trigger Hippie EP, ambient trio Morcheeba (South London's music-making brothers Paul and Ross Godfrey, and teary tunesmith Skye Edwards) have decided to space, spice and speed things up beyond "trip" and "hop" to accommodate mod-pop, Latin, rap, hillbilly country and John Barry. The result: Charango (Warner Bros.), a heady brew of molten slow-string songs like "Slow Down" and "Otherwise," Archie-sweet pop ("Undress Me Now"), bristlingly funny murder songs ("Women Lose Weight" -- with Slick Rick) and deeply heartaching but mean-spirited ballads like "What New York Couples Fight About," co-starring Lambchop's Kurt Wagner -- an anecdote to Nicole Kidman and Robbie Williams' take on "Somethin' Stupid."
Wed., Jan. 22, 8 p.m., $20, with Rosey, The TLA, 334 South St., 215-336-2000.
