The "prank letters" gag -- wherein unsuspecting public figures/corporations receive seemingly earnest correspondence from a well-meaning, sociopathic persona -- is not a new route to comedy. Still, while Don Novello's Lazlo Letters series remains the pinnacle, the genre's far from played out and there's plenty of room for Sterling Huck. An amateur entrepreneur, inventor and concerned citizen, Huck is the alter ego of Bill DeMain, songwriter-guitarist for Tennessee band Swan Dive. The Sterling Huck Letters include attempts to get fake words into the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, suggestions for new Ben & Jerry's flavors ("Wolfgang Amaretto Mocha"), and some hilarious back-and-forth with Amoco about plans to open up a pork company, Hamoco, with a suspiciously familiar-looking sign. The book, a compilation of prank letters going back to 1997, may be a bit short on suckered replies, but its attempts to entertain are mostly on target. Huck is not, unfortunately, coming to town to do a reading, but DeMain and Swan Dive are playing the Tin Angel on Wednesday.
