Hip Hop Hoodios

What’s a Latino-Jewish rap group to do? They’re bound to be seen as a novelty act. On the Raza Hoodia EP, Hip Hop Hoodios do their best to live up to the stereotype. While “Ocho Kandelikas” is a thrashy addition to the limited Hanukkah-song canon, only the party jam “Raza Hoodia” plays it straight for year-round listening. More typical is the tongue-in-cheek boasting of “Kike on the Mic” and “Dicks and Noses” (“You like our dicks and you like our noses/ You see a Jewish guy and you forget where your clothes is”), which succumbs to macho posing. They’re proud of belonging to two marginalized groups, but like the early Beastie Boys, their immature, overcompensating swagger excludes women. With just 20 minutes of released material, Hip Hop Hoodios have added some political songs to their repertoire. If they can get past the jokey machismo, they may just beat that novelty rap.

Sun., Feb. 9, 9 p.m., $10, with Jeb and Slo-Mo, The Fire, 412 W. Girard Ave., 267-671-9298.
