Insurrection Mass With Funeral Marches For Rotten Ideas

On Feb. 18, Camilo Viveiros, a housing organizer from New England, is scheduled to be tried for protesting at the Republican National Convention. Yes, that RNC, two and a half years ago. Of the 400 protesters arrested by police during the course of the convention, current estimates suggest 95 percent have had their cases thrown out of court.

Bread & Puppet Theater of Vermont has such an established reputation for backing up worthy causes that their support of Viveiros' cause through a performance this week has raised the profile of the case. They come to The Rotunda this Monday, presented by Puppet Uprising, to perform "Insurrection Mass With Funeral Marches for Rotten Ideas." Gigantic puppets, common-sense sermons and a flood of participation from the audience should bring the evangelism of social activism to a strictly secular setting: The basic premise of the wide-ranging event is to witness "a rotten idea revealed and [then] buried."

This special one-off performance promises to bring together everyone who's still really pissed off at so many needless arrests. They'll be joined by hosts of Viveiros' supporters, many traveling from New England to be present for his trial.

Mon., Feb. 17, 8 p.m., freewill donation, The Rotunda, 4012 Walnut St., 215-573-3234.
