Helium. That's what you'll think of when you hear Jordan Blilie and Johnny Whitney, the twin speed-driven vocalists of The Blood Brothers. As in the hyper Angus Young sucking on a helium tank before screaming through AC/DC's hits. There may be lusher, slower, skankier tunes on The Blood Brothers' debut Burn Piano Island, Burn (Artist Direct), but the overall eardrum-crackling crispness is a punk meth-head's dream. Producer Ross Robinson must have mixed this fucker at high altitude so that Cody Votolato's 150-mph guitar-army sound felt faster than cold fusion against the machine-gun rhythms. Yet the Seattle five-piece's main weapon is treble, a high-pitched density made higher by Whitney and Blilie's polyp-scraping screams. Whether shouting unrecognizable texts or cautiously enunciating phrases, these Bloods are sexy and sinister.
Thu., Feb. 13, 7 p.m., $7, all ages, with True North, Vaux and The Funeral Bird, First Unitarian Church, 2125 Chestnut St., 800-594-8499.
