Let"s face it, animals are better than people. Sure there"s the sporadic messing on the floor, but I bet your schnauzer has never given you the ³it"s not you, it"s me² treatment, or forgotten to TiVo the latest Michael Jackson special. So let us celebrate our four-legged friends this Saturday by attending the Morris Animal Refuge"s 2003 Fur Ball. The annual event, now in its seventh year, raises funds to ensure that the organization can continue to aid the seemingly countless number of abused and abandoned animals in our area. This year"s rocking 1950s theme is bursting with kitsch value, complete with Elvis Presley and Marilyn Monroe impersonators. Complementing the nostalgia factor is music by South Philly"s own Carlo Morelli, whose Sinatra-esque sound will have all the swinging cats in attendance believing that Old Blue Eyes is back. If reminiscing tends to work up your appetite, you can sample sumptuous foods from over 30 of Philly"s swankiest eateries. The dress code? Anything from casual to black tie, though costumes are certainly
purrfured. (After all, the event is sponsored by the unofficial Lord of Halloween, Henri David, and a costume contest is prominently featured as part of the evening.) If a real pet is too high maintenance for you, you"ll have the chance to bid on a stuffed one as part of a silent auction. Those among the legions who are still lamenting the demise of
Catson Broadway can get their faces painted like felines and ponder why the moon smiles alone.
