Regardless of your age, watching Scene 8 makes you feel like the show's target demographic -- what CN8 describes as "lucrative" women between the ages of 18 and 34. It can also make you feel like you're a big loser, especially because you're sitting at home watching TV while the trio of co-hosts is out dancing and downing Singapore slings. They're bona fide women-on-the-town: Alicia Denson and Jill Johnson are professional models; Denson's been an MTV dancer and Johnson serves as the editor of Tear Sheet, a trade magazine for models. Followed by cameras and techno music, the two handily tick off the city's finest in fashion, accessories, nightlife and trends like teenagers at a slumber party, while Nicole Woodruff jumps headfirst into political and arts interviews with the enthusiasm local lights deserve. They've done shows on vintage clothing and retro looks (shot at South Street's Retrospect and Antiques Market); taken an impressive look at the Wilma Theater's production of Dirty Blonde that included in-depth interviews with the actors; visited with a young violin star at the Curtis Institute of Music; covered the local Barrymore Awards; and interviewed Philly native and nationally syndicated loudmouth Chris Matthews. It's fun, gossipy and always fashionable. In separate conversations, director Steven Horn and producer Bridget Small dish on Scene 8, about to shoot its 13th episode.
City Paper: What's been featured on Scene 8?
Bridget Small: We've interviewed restaurateurs like Stephen Starr when Cuban was all the rage, and we did a Latin night and talked about the mojito and talked to [Starr] at the opening of Alma de Cuba and we took salsa lessons.
Steven Horn: We did a whole beer tour. We went to Monk's, we went to Ludwig's and we went to The Foodery. Then we did a whole show on lingerie. We went to [local photographer] Dominic Episcopo and we interviewed him and watched a photo shoot, then we went over to the Bellevue, to The Hope Chest and Nicole Miller and they showed what to wear with see-through blouses and low-rise pants.
CP: There's a very girly-girl vibe on the show. Is that what you were going for?
BS: Yeah, like "I'll give you the tips. Here's the real scene." These hosts are going to give you the tips from the fashion experts and the hot places to go and things that are up and coming.
SH: We really wanted it to be something that was freeform, free-flowing. We like Style and we like E! network but they're inhibited by what they do and how they do it. We really wanted to be more behind the scenes of what's really happening and what's going on in Philadelphia, Washington and Boston.
CP: Anything new in the works?
SH: We're starting a show about [a procedure] called image-guided laser surgery. [A local doctor] does this procedure for uterine fibroids. We feel that women's health is really a situation that's pathetic in this country, so we want to do something that addresses women's health issues, and he's going to let us in the operating room and see how he does this procedure that enables women [to forgo] hysterectomies when they have these fibroids, which is very prevalent. And we're going to combine that with some kind of spa thing and herbalistic remedies, so we're going to do a couple of health shows. We also want to do a show on women boxing at the Blue Horizon. We want to do really edgy things that people know about but have never been involved with, and we want to get inside and let people know what the real story is.
Scene 8 airs Sundays at 5 and 11 p.m. on CN8. For more information visit www.cn8.com.
