Company B Program

In dance timing counts for a heck of a lot, and the timing of Pennsylvania Ballet’s latest program is spot on. One of the pieces presented is Paul Taylor’s Company B, an ode to the World War II era. Featuring joyous jitterbugging and swing dance set to the sounds of The Andrews Sisters, Company B also carries a subtext of the heartache and loneliness associated with the brutal consequences of war. Considering our current circumstances, the work will surely hold a stronger resonance than usual.

Kevin O’Day’s Quartet for IV (and sometimes one, two or three …) sets the troupe off on a romp of contemporary movement-based solos, duets and trios. The choreographer has noted that there’s no special theme intended; this one’s designed simply to highlight the dancer’s athletic and artistic talents. Likewise, Val Caniparoli’s Jaybird Lounge gives the corps a workout in 18 sections set to progressive arrangements of J. S. Bach music performed by acclaimed pianist Uri Caine. The music contains elements of jazz, blues, Latin and hip-hop sounds. The three selections offer a varied program designed to lift our spirits.
