The gaming industry has grown exponentially since the days of the Atari 2600, so it makes sense that Philadelphia's premier gamers event is booming right along with it. The David Newman-founded PhillyClassic, the East Coast classic gamers event celebrating games from Space Invaders to Tony Hawk, unveils its fourth installment this year, and just as three trumped the first two, PhillyClassic 4 promises even more for gaming enthusiasts of all ages.
Along with the traditional bank of classic coin-op arcade games set on free play, dealers of games and gear, and a what's-what of classic home gaming consoles, PhillyClassic 4 will feature a lineup of esteemed gaming guests. First off, Sid Meier, creator of addictive simulation games Civilization, Gettysburg!, Antietam! and Alpha Centauri, will be in the house to talk shop. Also in attendance will be Meier collaborator Jeff Briggs, president and CEO of Firaxis Games; actress Cindy Morgan, whose role in Tron will have drooling gamers tripping over each other for a signed photo; and Atari/Activision game programmer Bob Polaro (whose credits include Defender, Real Sports VolleyBall, SprintMaster, Road Runner and Rampage) signing copies of StuntCycle for the Atari 2600.
The three-day gaming extravaganza will also boast four new games for the 2600 (yes, new games), console tournaments, giveaways, a costume contest (possibly inspired by the Pitfall Harry-garbed fellow last year) and an auction. This year's PhillyClassic will also debut the charitable JoySticks outreach program wherein games are donated to the Children's Hospital Foundation benefiting Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, and kids from the Warwick House group home will be invited to play till their blisters have blisters.
