Crooked Fingers

Back in the mid-'90s -- surely you remember the golden era of alt-rock? -- Eric Bachmann mixed dissonance and melody with Archers of Loaf. Seemed like most everybody liked the Archers, but Bachmann grew weary. Under the guise of Barry Black, he released some bizzaro pop as the new century loomed and the Archers were folding. Enter his new band, Crooked Fingers, which after three albums seems to have turned Bachmann into a Springsteen-like troubadour with a flair for putting melancholy, faceless everyman characters on top of loops and electronics. His latest, Red Devil Dawn (Merge), draws heavily on his ability to spin a good yarn and that frazzled, punch-drunk voice.

Sun., April 6, 7 p.m., $10-$12, benefits UPenn’s WQHS radio station, with Spoon and SQ, The Rotunda, 4012 Walnut St., 215-573-3234. Tickets available at Spruce Street Records (4004 Spruce St.) and Spaceboy Music (409 South St.).
